The Fight Against MTR, Round-up #4

Just last week, the bill H.R. 1310, which will effectively ban mountaintop removal/valley fill mining, was introduced to the House by Rep. Frank Pallone [NJ], Rep. John Yarmuth [KY] and Rep. Reichert [WA-R], with 116 co-sponsors.

Jeff Biggers of the Huffington Post wrote a great piece about the new legislation: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-biggers/black-waters-no-more-clea_b_171793.html

At the end of this post  is a list of the co-sponsors. If your delegate is not on the list, PLEASE contact him or her using the Congressional switchboard: toll free, 800.828.0498.

Meanwhile, a  wave of civil disobedience has come to West Virginia’s Coal River Valley.   Five more protesters have been arrested for trespassing on a Massey owned mountaintop removal site. The recent protest occurred on the ongoing mine above Marsh Fork Elementary School. The blasting shakes the students in their desks.  The mining behind the school is especially dangerous because a sludge pond holding 2.8 billion gallons of toxic slurry looms ominously above it. Not only can blasting destabilize the earthen dam, but it increases surface water runoff and sedimentation in the pond.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said this about the Coal River Valley: ”I flew over these mountains and I saw what [the coal companies] were doing and if the American people could see what I saw there would be a revolution in this country…”

In other news, TVA has launched a campaign of harassment and intimidation at activists helping victims of December’s massive coal ash spill. Just last night, Matt Landon, a volunteer with United Mountain Defense, was arrested while he was driving a 90 year old blind lady home from a meeting. Chris Irwin reported,

On March 4 2008 two grandmothers from Swan Pond asked UMD volunteer Matt for a ride home cause they didn’t drive. Matt agreed and dropped the last one off at her home when TVA police came onto her property to arrest Matt. In the video the officer first tells Matt that he warned him that he had to have a resident with him when he drove on the public road. When the resident came out and Matt explained that he DID have a resident with him the officer changed the rules and arrested him for something else. Matt was polite, was not breaking any traffic law—he was simply giving to Swan Pond Grandmothers a ride home—one who is half blind. The officer knew who Matt was—this is part of the pattern of non stop harassment of UMD volunteers.

You can see video of the arrest here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2ltonE1IdM&eurl=http://www.gnn.tv/B31393

On March 14th, protesters will gather in Knoxville, TN, to speak out against mountaintop removal and TVA’s harrassment of activists. Read all about it at www.tvamarchinmarch.com. March 14th is also the start of End Mountaintop Removal Week in Washington, D.C.
